Corner Taco started in 2011 as a tiny 100 square foot taco stand inside of an Oceanfront Bar in Jacksonville, Florida. We had a wood burning grill that was fueled by local Pecan wood and made fresh tortillas daily. In 2012, we became one of the first food trucks in the South, serving Mexclectic tacos from a 1965 Airstream. We developed a cult like following with lines that were sometimes 100 yards long. Corner Taco was apart of the emerging gourmet food truck movement that now exists in Jacksonville (currently around 150 mobile vendors).
Our standards have always been higher than most restaurants, and some of Jacksonville's best food now comes from food trucks. We earned 2 Slow Food Snails of Approval in 2011, and are likely the only Mexican Restaurant within several hundred miles to have earned that honor (commitment to local, high quality ingredients).
We opened a bricks & mortar location in February of 2014 and have received plenty of press (mentions in The Local Palate, profiled by Alton Brown and many more).
Some of the awards we’ve received are:
After graduating from Wake Forest, Corner Taco's owner and founder Chris Dickerson completed the Chef's apprenticeship program at The Cloister Hotel on Sea Island. He regularly staged with some of the South's best chefs which resulted in him being recruited by some top kitchens. He cooked at The Little Nell in Aspen under George Mahaffey and later worked for Nobu Matsuhisa. Chris is a regular on the Southern Food Festival Circuit and has cooked with many notable chefs, for many luminaries and was even part of a team who cooked for Paul Bocuse. Chris and Corner Taco were featured in a Super Bowl ad for Chase bank that highlighted the region’s most iconic landmarks and businesses. Chris is regularly invited to speak and teach classes on restaurant and food truck entrepreneurship and was the featured speaker for Cum Laude Inductees at Episcopal School of Jacksonville.
*Our sister restaurants Squirrel’s Pizza and Burrito Royale are open in Savannah
